Portable practice

Leave with evidence, not a guess.

Two compact methods help a visitor preserve the relationship between mark, object and official record without touching, tracing or over-processing.

Photography rules vary by site, collection and worship space. Posted instructions and staff guidance always outrank this fieldbook.

01

Respect the rule

No flash, tripod or photography means exactly that. A missing image is better than a damaged object or disrupted space.

02

Preserve the number

An accession or inventory number is often the best route from a short gallery label to a fuller collection record.

03

Write uncertainty

Use “possibly,” “labelled as” and “not visible in this frame” when the evidence does not support certainty.
